Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 bans sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual assault, for any school receiving federal funds. While it is often thought of as a law that applies to athletic programs, Title IX is much broader than athletics and applies to many programs at a university. For more information on Title IX compliance and how it applies to sexual assault, please refer to the “Dear Colleague” letter issued by the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights.
