Why are we having this open forum?

We are hosting this forum to address the pain that sexual violence causes within the Rutgers community and to acknowledge systemic and cultural ways we can support survivors and promote accountability for those who use violence at Rutgers. We want to centralize the experiences of all students – regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic racial background, or any other identity. This listening session is solely hosted by the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance.

Who will be attending?

This event will be public. Attendees may include survivors, accused students, friends, Rutgers employees, and others.

What to expect:

This is an open-space forum hosted by the Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance. The conversation will last from 7:30pm to 9:00pm having members of VPVA present.  Students can engage by either sharing out loud or sending a question/comment through the discussion box.

What participants WILL see:

  • the names of the panelists and moderator
  • the total number of attendees
  • anything written in the chat AND the name of the person who wrote in the chat (remember, you choose the name you want displayed)
  • any answered questions in the Q&A AND the name of the individual who asked the question (remember, you choose the name you want displayed)

What participants will NOT see:

  • Any messages/comments sent to host only

Community Guidelines:

  • Be as brave and honest as you can, while respecting others.
  • Be mindful of taking the time you need to share, while also leaving time for others to share.
  • If at any time you would like to speak with a trained advocate, please message an advocate directly using the private chat feature. Advocates will be identified by having ‘VPVA Advocate’ in their name. You can also call VPVA’s 24/7 hotline at 848-932-1811.
  • This is a communal space where people can share openly, if they choose to do so. If anyone mentions a plan to harm self or others, you’ll be contacted by staff for support and further assessment.
  • While we encourage participants to share their thoughts openly, we ask that no one shares identifying characteristics or the names of anyone involved. Panelists will not discuss the details of individual incidents and/or cases.
  • Remember that this is a public forum and anyone can attend.
  • If anyone becomes disruptive, they will receive a warning from the moderator. If the disruptive behavior persists, the moderator reserves the right to remove that participant for the safety of the group. Disruptive behavior, as defined by the Code of Student Conduct, is intentionally or recklessly interfering with any University activity or University sponsored activity. Disorderly conduct, as defined by the Code of Student Conduct, is engaging in conduct that is disruptive, lewd, or indecent, regardless of intent, which breaches the peace of the community. Please note that being disruptive is not the same as expressing anger, which is welcomed.

Resources

Goals for the Open Forum:

  • Help the community heal. We recognize the harm that many students have experienced. We will work together to repair that harm and strengthen our community.
  • Listen to students.  This is a space for you to speak about your experiences. We will listen to you and aim to better understand your expectations for Rutgers University. We want to hear your ideas on how we can best support you.
  • Share information, resources, and support. We will answer your questions and explain both the scope and limitations of our work, and share what we have been doing to address your concerns. We will also share all of the resources and support available for students both on and off-campus.
